About the Farm
Background
The farm's history began in 1922 when the great-grandfather immigrated to America and started a dairy farm in Wisconsin. In 1927, he moved his cows by rail to the current location. In 1961, the grandfather started Red Wagon Farm by selling vegetables on a board stretched across two chairs. The farm grew to 40 acres of vegetables sold at the farmstand. The family moved from Broome County to Tioga County in 2009, bought the farm, and began rebuilding the farmstand. They expanded to include a flock for fresh eggs and fields with blueberries for a future 'pick your own' operation.
Practices
The farm utilizes traditional farming techniques to limit the impact on the soil and surrounding environment, striving to be good stewards of the land for the next generation. They use organic soil, organic fertilizer, and no biocides in their you-pick market garden of tomatoes, peppers, and other vegetables.
The Rest
Throughout the year, the farm offers free-range eggs, maple syrup, and a variety of seedlings. They also provide freshly cut Christmas trees during the holiday season. The farmstand regularly updates its offerings, including rhubarb, garlic scapes, and various seedlings. They emphasize the importance of knowing where your food comes from and aim to provide as much food from their land or nearby farms.
