About the Farm

Background

Rancho de los Proyectos began as a family garden about 10 years ago, aimed at providing home-grown organic food for the family. Over time, the farm expanded to supply friends, neighbors, and several families through a CSA program. The farm is known for its diverse produce, including tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, onions, garlic, herbs, broccoli, cauliflower, and citrus, as well as raising chickens for eggs and meat. The family behind the farm, consisting of Erik, Becky, Darwin, and Gabriela, are passionate educators and active participants in local food-related organizations.

Practices

The farm employs organic farming methods and places a strong emphasis on soil and environmental care. They have installed solar panels, practice energy conservation, and make compost from farm and household waste to enhance soil fertility. The farm also engages in various homesteading activities such as canning, drying, and freezing food, as well as creating body care products and herbal teas. Their sustainability projects include striving for a carbon-neutral lifestyle, using fuel-efficient cars, and planning for rainwater collection and infiltration.

The Rest

In addition to farming, the family enjoys fiber arts, including spinning, knitting, crocheting, and dyeing with both home-grown and purchased natural dyes. They keep a small flock of sheep for wool and meat, and an alpaca for guarding. The farm offers tours and is involved in several community organizations such as Slow Foods Redlands, Label GMOs, and Green Mamas Buying Club. They also homeschool their children and participate in groups like La Leche League and Code Pink/Women for Peace.
