About the Farm
Background
Rainbow Homestead has established itself as a sanctuary where wildlife thrives alongside rare breeds of livestock. The farm is known for its heirloom gardens and orchards, which provide nourishment while also supporting diverse ecosystems.
Practices
The farm employs a holistic approach, farming within Nature's patterns and rhythms. Practices include rotational grazing on organic pastures filled with diverse forages such as dandelions, chicory, yarrow, clovers, and sorrel. Cold-hardy forages like turnips and canola extend grazing into winter. Livestock are raised on 100 percent forages with no grain for lamb and beef, while pastured poultry and pork are supplemented with certified organic grain. Humane treatment is emphasized, with lambs keeping their natural long tails.
The Rest
Products include 100% grass-fed lamb and beef, pastured pork and poultry, available for purchase at the farm, the Madison farmers market, or via mail-order from November to March. Local natural foods stores also carry their meats. The farm's herbal meadows support livestock diets and provide habitat for honeybees.
