About the Farm

Background

Founded with a mission to embody permaculture design, the farm has transformed a once mismanaged alluvial floodplain into a sanctuary for wildlife and a hub for ecological education. Since enrolling in the CREP and EQIP programs in 2010 and 2011, the farm has become known for its diverse and productive riparian buffers and its collaborative efforts with local environmental groups to reforest eroding riverbanks.

Practices

The farm integrates permaculture principles to create systems that enhance ecological health while meeting human needs. It focuses on research, innovation, and education about new crops and techniques that are both profitable and regenerative. The land includes ponds, wetlands, upland forest, and river edges, and efforts are made to reforest riverbanks with native trees. The farm also selects and preserves the best genetics adapted for the region, selling seeds and propagules to other growers.

The Rest

The farm direct markets its products to community members, Burlington, and area restaurants, and hosts workshops on various agricultural and ecological topics. It also offers farm-based hostel opportunities and 'Chef in the Field' dinner events. Additionally, Rooted Earth Healing Arts & Botanicals, run by Kori Gelinas, provides custom blended teas and herbal medicines. The farm is situated along the Lamoille River, adjacent to the Long Trail and the Rail Trail, offering recreational activities and opportunities for people to connect with the natural world.
