About the Farm
Background
Located on the windswept Coteau des Prairies, the farm began as a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) and market farm. Over the years, it shifted focus to garlic, testing over twenty varieties since 2004 and currently offering seven. In 2016, a flock of Clun Forest cross sheep was added to the farm, enhancing its offerings with grassfed meat and fiber products.
Practices
The farm adheres to certified organic methods, avoiding synthetic herbicides, pesticides, and fertilizers. Garlic is planted in the fall and covered with a thick layer of mulch, followed by hand-weeding in spring and a July harvest. Practices include crop rotation, cover cropping, mulching, and rotational grazing. Composted manure from sheep and horses, along with naturally-sourced minerals, are used to maintain soil fertility. Several acres of perennial native grasses are cultivated to provide mulch, wildlife habitat, and continuous soil cover.
The Rest
The farm's diverse customer base includes seed companies, market farmers, home gardeners, restaurants, food co-ops, and grocery stores. The farm's garlic varieties are selected from their own stock each year to ensure quality. The farm also emphasizes the importance of using natural systems in a holistic approach to land stewardship.
