About the Farm
Background
Founded in 1956 by Jack and Dorothy Porter after meeting at Cornell University, the farm initially focused on livestock before transitioning to organic produce in 1990. The farm has grown to over 500 acres, with 100 acres dedicated to vegetable crops. The CSA program began in 1996 with 100 member families and has expanded to over 600 member families, celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2020.
Practices
The farm adheres to certified organic standards set by the Northeast Organic Farming Association of New York, ensuring the land is free of synthetic pesticides and herbicides. Farming practices include crop rotation, cover crops, minimum tillage, and the use of natural methods to enhance soil health and encourage beneficial microorganisms. The farm's commitment to organic farming is reflected in its certification process and involvement in sustainable agriculture research and education initiatives.
The Rest
The CSA program offers over 30 distribution sites in Western New York, providing convenience and value to members. The farm distributes vegetables the day after they are picked, ensuring maximum freshness and flavor. Prospective members can try a free guest bag, and new members are accepted throughout the 20-week season at a pro-rated fee.
