About the Farm

Background

Pleasant Valley Farm was established in 1988 by Paul and Sandy Arnold after Paul, inspired by a cross-country trip and a visit to a Michigan farmers' market, decided to pursue farming. Starting on a single acre in his parents' backyard, Paul expanded to 60 acres in Argyle, NY. Sandy, with a background in botany and management, joined him in this venture. The farm grew over the years, with the couple living in a pop-up camper initially and building their house and farm infrastructure themselves. Their children, Robert and Kim, have been integral to the farm's operations since a young age.

Practices

The farm employs organic methods to cultivate 7 acres of vegetables and an acre of fruits. They focus on efficiency, lean principles, and the use of cutting-edge technology, particularly in season extension. Since 2007, they have utilized unheated high tunnels and controlled root storage to supply vegetables and herbs year-round. The farm also emphasizes mentoring, crop research, and customer-driven marketing practices.

The Rest

Pleasant Valley Farm sells over 90% of its produce directly to customers at local farmers' markets, with the remainder going to local outlets and farm-to-table restaurants. They offer annual farm tours, internships, and opportunities for aspiring farmers. The farm is known for its community engagement, with Paul and Sandy speaking at conferences and mentoring other farmers. Their son, Robert, has contributed to the farm's technological advancements through his business, Smart Farm Innovations.
