About the Farm
Background
Originating from farming families and lifelong residents of Arizona, the operation benefits from access to ancient seed lines through native peoples. Michael and Bettie Bailey, along with their son and a few local friends, manage the farm on a smaller scale using permaculture-based gardens.
Practices
The farm employs natural inputs for nutrients and pest control, including extensive use of compost, soil building with mulch and crop remains, and companion planting. Pest control is managed through excision, selection, compost teas, and the cultivation of beneficial birds, reptiles, and insects. The farm insists on sterile soil and amendments, inoculated only with their own soil organisms to maintain local conditions. Selection criteria for seeds include vigor, size, production, flavor, drought resistance, hardiness to temperature extremes, and unusual colors.
The Rest
Located in Arizona, the farm emphasizes heirloom seed varieties adapted to the Southwest Desert, Southwest mountains, West Coast, Intermountain West, and Big Sky Redoubt. The unique geography allows for growing in both desert and alpine climates. The farm is a FarmVetCo Farm, certified 'Homegrown by Heroes' by the Farmer Veteran Coalition. Ongoing trials are conducted to determine the suitability of heirloom varieties from around the globe for regional conditions.
