About the Farm
Background
The farm began its operation in 2004 on ancestral farmland in Shade Gap, Pennsylvania, and moved to Cornville, Maine in 2008. The greater Skowhegan area, known for its innovative farmers and craft people, has welcomed the farm with open arms.
Practices
The farm cultivates 3 acres of produce, herbs, and flowers organically, taking cues from the natural order and allowing animals and plants to express their natural behaviors. They use a blend of micronutrients and biological agents like mycorrhizal fungi with compost-based, certified organic potting soil. Beneficial insects are released in the greenhouse to manage pests. Most plants are sold in biodegradable pots to reduce transplant shock and plastic waste. The farm emphasizes the importance of living soil teeming with beneficial organisms for optimal nutrient uptake.
The Rest
The farm markets its goods at the Skowhegan Farmers Market and supplies local restaurants and whole foods markets. They offer a variety of vegetable, herb, and flower seedlings, with a focus on open-pollinated and hybrid varieties. Customers can pre-order plants online or shop in-person at the on-farm nursery. The farm is certified by the state of Maine and MOFGA.
