About the Farm
Background
Established in 2012, the North DeKalb Mall Community Garden began as an outreach project aimed at benefiting local refugee families and fostering community engagement. Initiated by Taylor Dozier, the garden has grown through partnerships with organizations like the International Rescue Committee, Atlanta Community Food Bank, and Global Growers Network. By 2014, it had garnered support from local businesses such as Stivers Subaru, which contributed essential supplies.
Practices
The garden is divided into larger market plots and smaller community plots. Refugee families, in collaboration with the IRC, tend the market plots, growing food for personal consumption or sale. The community plots are farmed by local groups and individuals, fostering interaction and learning. Volunteers, including Master Gardeners, provide educational workshops on farming techniques and food safety. The garden's diverse plantings include vegetables, herbs, flowers, and fruit trees, emphasizing a rich biodiversity.
The Rest
The garden features 27 assigned plots and plans to open a produce stand to further support the community. For participation or sponsorship information, visit the mall website or contact the IRC.
