About the Farm
Background
Located in the hills of western Massachusetts, overlooking the Quabbin Reservoir, lies the historic town of New Salem, home to a farm dating back to circa 1750. Known for its heirloom apples, primarily McIntosh, the farm boasts trees that are over 125 years old. The apples are delivered to local markets, CSAs, schools, co-ops, and general stores, and are also pressed into sweet cider each week at the farm's mill. Harvest time is a community event, drawing friends and neighbors to enjoy hot mulled cider, local Cheddar cheese, apples, sweet cider, preserves, and apple butter. The farm also offers cider doughnuts on weekends and invites visitors to experience the stunning fall foliage and old New England traditions.
Practices
The farm's apples are grown in heirloom orchards on the grounds dating back to 1750. Products are made or sourced locally, with a focus on handcrafting with care. The farm emphasizes traditional methods, pressing sweet cider weekly at their mill and creating a variety of apple-based products.
The Rest
The farm also features New Salem Cider, a sister company offering hard cider and an outdoor cider garden from mid-May through November. Sweet cider is available from mid-to-late September. Visitors can enjoy the scenic hill town, partake in fall festivities, and taste a bit of old New England traditions. The owner, Carol Hillman, is an entrepreneur, author, educator, naturalist, and farmer.
