About the Farm
Background
Founded in 1975 by actress Carmen Mathews, the farm has grown into a year-round environmental education center. It spans 102 acres in West Redding, Connecticut, and has been recognized as a Connecticut Dairy Farm of Distinction. The farm is known for its diverse educational programs, including school field trips, adult lectures, family programs, and children's classes.
Practices
The farm integrates traditional farming activities with educational programs. Children and visitors can engage in milking cows, planting and harvesting vegetables, and spinning fleece from local lambs. The farm emphasizes hands-on learning and active engagement with the natural world. It features woodlands, wetlands, a pollinator meadow, and rolling pastures, all serving as outdoor classrooms. The farm also includes a Native American encampment and astronomy buildings used for educational purposes.
The Rest
The farm offers a variety of programs and events, such as art shows, barn dances, and seasonal celebrations like pancake breakfasts and Easter egg hunts. It also has facilities like a Dairy Annex where visitors can purchase freshly pasteurized milk and yogurt. The summer camp program brings together children from the surrounding area to form friendships and discover the wonders of the property.
