About the Farm

Background

In 2009, the Multicultural Refugee Coalition (MRC) began as a volunteer-run community center offering support to refugees, including sewing lessons and job-seeking assistance. By 2017, MRC refocused its mission on creating livelihood opportunities, leading to the development of two social enterprises: a sewing studio and a commercial farm. New Leaf Agriculture, part of MRC, trains and employs refugee farmers from traditional farming cultures, providing dignified, fair-wage work.

Practices

New Leaf Agriculture employs a permaculture master plan, working with the existing ecosystem to grow produce. As a Certified USDA Organic farm, they avoid chemical pesticides and fertilizers, instead using soil conservation practices such as cover cropping, composting, and crop rotation. These methods ensure the health of the soil and the surrounding environment, fostering a sustainable agricultural system.

The Rest

New Leaf Agriculture offers a weekly CSA program, providing seasonal produce to the local community in Travis County and at the Texas Farmers Market at Mueller. They also run a Buy One, Give One CSA program, donating shares to refugee households through partnerships with various organizations. The farm hosts community events like a Meet Your Farmer Potluck Picnic and a You-Pick Tomatoes Party, fostering a sense of community and connection between farmers and supporters.
