About the Farm

Background

Founded in 1880, New England Nurseries is one of the oldest nurseries in the state. Originally part of Geneva Nursery established in 1846, the combined operation served the Northeast with 800 acres of land. Known as Shady Hill Nursery until 1912, the name was changed due to negative connotations. The nursery specialized in landscape design and planting of large and medium-sized estates, with John Kierkegaard, formerly of the Botanical Gardens in Copenhagen, becoming owner soon thereafter. Over the years, the nursery has maintained its commitment to quality and value, evolving into a modern garden center.

Practices

The nursery has a long-standing tradition of reclaiming and maintaining old growing fields to ensure the quality and variety of products. They emphasize landscape design and planting, offering complimentary advice to homeowners. The nursery's practices include the use of fieldstone walls for storage and potting.

The Rest

New England Nurseries offers a wide range of products including trees, shrubs, annuals, perennials, houseplants, cacti, and succulents. They provide bulk gardening and landscaping services, including mulch delivery and installation, walkway and patio construction, sod installation, and hydroseeding. The nursery also has a rich history of shipping products across the country, with a commitment to serving customers with quality, advice, and value.
