About the Farm
Background
After a period of recovery from an industrial accident, the farm has resumed operations. The farm is known for its diverse livestock, including old spots hogs, dorper sheep, laying hens, kiko goats, and angus cattle. The farm is in the process of rebuilding its flocks and herds, with a focus on increasing breeding capacity and production.
Practices
The farm employs rotational grazing and forest finishing methods to manage its livestock. Laying hens are moved around the pasture using the eggmobile model, following the sheep and goat rotation to enhance soil fertility and create a healthy grazing environment. The farm is also growing non-GMO field corn to produce feed for its animals, reducing reliance on external sources. Crossbreeding kiko goats with nubian/boer crosses aims to develop naturally healthy grazing and browsing goats. The farm is working on improving cow pastures and fencing to support a pasture-based herd of angus cattle, while also using jersey and guernsey cows as nurse cows.
The Rest
A farm field day is planned for June to introduce visitors to the farm's systems and products. The event will feature sheep shearing, cow milking, heritage mountain music, and a picnic with farm products.
