About the Farm
Background
The MSU Student Organic Farm spans 15 acres and has established itself as a year-round teaching and production farm. It supports a 42-week CSA, a 5-month on-campus farm stand, and supplies fresh produce to MSU dining halls.
Practices
The farm employs passive solar greenhouses, also known as hoophouses, to maintain year-round production. Winter crops include salad mix, spinach, kale, collards, chard, Asian greens, cilantro, parsley, radishes, carrots, and beets, which are supplemented by storage crops like squash, garlic, potatoes, onions, cabbage, and rutabaga.
The Rest
The farm offers an 8-month Organic Farmer Training Program (OFTP) and a Farmer Field School. CSA shares are available for $575 per 16 weeks, designed to feed a family of four or two voracious vegetable eaters. Additional farm products such as eggs, meats, fruits, honey, and cut flowers are available for purchase at CSA distribution.
