About the Farm

Background

Moylinny Farm has been a family-run operation since 1970 when Aurora 'Tewky' Reford and her husband Michael purchased it from the Hetherington family, who originally homesteaded the land. Tewky, originally from Alberta, has lived on the farm since then and remains active in its daily operations. The farm has seen three generations of the Reford family, with Dave Reford taking over management after his father's passing in 2005. Dave, a University of Toronto graduate, returned to the farm in 1991 and has balanced farming with his artistic pursuits. His wife, Stephanie Sitzberger, joined the farm in 1995 and rekindled her love for horses, starting a small horse breeding business. Their children, Elsie and Lucie, also contribute to the farm's activities.

Practices

The farm's Hereford cattle are grass-fed and naturally raised, living outdoors and consuming grass and hay grown without pesticides or chemical fertilizers. The animals do not receive any animal by-products, growth hormones, or antibiotics. Moylinny Farm is committed to land stewardship, raising animals in a way that the pastures and hay fields can naturally support without chemical intervention. This approach ensures a sustainable balance between farming and the surrounding ecosystem, which includes the adjacent Gatineau Park, a refuge for numerous species of birds, mammals, and plants.

The Rest

Moylinny Farm provides an important wildlife corridor in an increasingly suburban area, allowing domestic and wild animals to coexist. The farm sells its beef by the whole animal, side, or quarter, with custom cutting available on all orders. Orders are typically taken in the fall, with occasional availability at other times of the year. The farm's proximity to Gatineau Park enhances its ecological significance, offering a unique blend of agricultural and natural environments.
