About the Farm
Background
Established in 2017 after relocating from leased land, the farm has grown to about 7.5 acres in production by 2022. The owners, Liz and Brian, both graduated from Auburn University's College of Agriculture and have been farming full-time for ten seasons. They previously operated Southern Foothills Farm and have a background in fruit and vegetable production and environmental chemistry/microbiology.
Practices
Farming methods prioritize ecological diversity and soil quality through intensive cover cropping, crop rotation, organic fertilizers, promoting beneficial insects, and using only naturally-occurring OMRI-approved pesticides. The farm employs mechanical cultivation and cover cropping for weed control, avoiding herbicides except for plastic mulch on strawberries. Applications of beneficial soil bacteria, fungi, nematodes, plant extracts, and minerals are used to control pests and disease.
The Rest
The farm operates a CSA program with deliveries from April to November, serving multiple locations including Mentone, Fort Payne, Huntsville, Birmingham, Gadsden, Guntersville, Trussville, and Chattanooga. They also occasionally sell produce through a self-serve stand at the farm gate. The farm's location atop Lookout Mountain provides a cooler and breezier climate at 1650' elevation, and its isolation protects it from potential pollution risks.
