About the Farm
Background
Starting in 1997 with registered Jacob sheep, the farm expanded to include Icelandic sheep in 2004 and Texel sheep in 2012. Over the years, they have tried different breeds and animals, focusing on those that are easy to manage and efficient. They are known for their high-quality breeding stock and grass-fed lambs, as well as their diverse produce offerings.
Practices
The farm employs organic methods as much as possible, avoiding chemical fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, and treated seeds in their gardens and orchards. They use OMRI-approved substances for pest control on fruit trees and Bt on cole crops. Fertilizer is used on pastures, and some grain is given to lambs during winter or stressful times. Seed saving is practiced, especially with tomatoes and legumes. The farm emphasizes the health and contentment of their animals and plants, striving for a natural and sustainable environment.
The Rest
The farm sells a variety of products including handspun yarn, wool, sheep pelts, skulls, horns, felt balls, jellies, jams, dried herbs, and vegetables. They market their produce at the Farmer's Market in Wooster, OH, and some products are available year-round at Local Roots in Wooster. On-farm direct sales and mail-order for shippable items are also offered. They do not ship meat or animals by mail but can deliver sheep to local processors or nearby locations for a fee. The farm's animals and plants complement each other well, creating a balanced ecosystem.
