About the Farm
Background
In 1872, Johan and Johanna Handeen emigrated from Sweden and settled in Sparta Township in western Chippewa County. A century later, their descendants began stewarding the original family farmstead, maintaining a strong conservation ethic grounded by Richard's ancestors.
Practices
The farm supports continuous living cover through grazing and hay acres, and has planted 40 acres with 42 woody species. They practice holistic management, permaculture design, and sustainable community principles, aiming to leave the land in better condition than when they arrived.
The Rest
The farm features Moonstone Beef, PastureLand cheese and butter from pasture-grazing cows, and The Broodio, a one-room cottage offering a unique farmstay experience. Visitors can enjoy camping, local artisan foods, and handthrown pottery amidst the varied landscape of the Minnesota River Valley.
