About the Farm
Background
Set within 300 acres in an Appalachian valley, Moonshadow has developed a small ecovillage on the side of a forested mountain. The Sequatchie Valley Institute, which operates the site, aims to offer society opportunities to experience and learn about living in harmony with nature. They provide education, art, and research opportunities, as well as land conservation and restoration through a dynamic model residence and learning center.
Practices
Guided by permaculture design, the ecovillage utilizes clearings and south-facing slopes to create a sustainable living environment. The focus is on supporting biodiversity and practicing deep ecology, demonstrating how humans can live lightly on the Earth.
The Rest
The institute hosts annual Spring Wildflower Hikes and operates the Liquidambar Art Gallery, which features unique art pieces and is open on weekends. Visitors can enjoy the trails and the gallery, which showcases works made from local materials such as clay and forest fire ashes.
