About the Farm
Background
About 20 years ago, a 'city girl' married a farmer who had been working the land for 43 years until a stroke in 2013 ended his farming career. To aid in his recovery, they started raising chickens, leveraging their holistic lifestyle that included making their own kefir and kombucha. Over the years, they have become known for their organically-fed, pasture-raised chickens and their commitment to natural health practices.
Practices
The farm employs a fodder system to provide living food year-round, ensuring the chickens receive fresh sprouts from barley, wheat, oats, and legumes. They supplement the chickens' diet with homemade kefir, kombucha, and soil-based probiotics. The farm also uses Verma castings in the water for additional probiotics and has a 'worm room' to provide essential amino acids during winter. They avoid antibiotics and wormers, instead boosting the chickens' immune systems with Oreganol oil and thyme. The chickens are pastured and receive a nutrient-rich diet that includes non-GMO feed and hand-raised worms.
The Rest
The farm is licensed by the State of Illinois and subject to random inspections to ensure compliance. They are working towards becoming a level #1 processing plant to package their own organically-fed ground chicken, homemade organic chicken stock, kombucha, kefir, dehydrated dog treats, and encapsulated eggshells and beets. They emphasize the superior quality and nutrient richness of their eggs, reusing eggshells to make capsules filled with minerals and amino acids for bone health and arthritis support.
