About the Farm
Background
The Holmes family began their farming journey on leased land in Hardwick, Massachusetts, from 2004 to 2013, cultivating a supportive community in the Greater Boston area. Seeking a more sustainable operation, they moved to Albion, Maine, in 2016, where they established Misty Brook Farm. The farm is now a Maine Farmland Trust designated 'Forever Farm,' thanks to state and federal grants that made the purchase possible. Over the years, Misty Brook has built a loyal customer base and navigated challenges like PFAS contamination with integrity and transparency.
Practices
Misty Brook Farm adheres to certified organic standards, with a strong emphasis on rotational grazing and grass-fed diets. The cow herd has been 100% grass-fed and certified organic since 2005, while the sheep flock is primarily grass-fed with a small supplement of home-grown organic oats during milking. Both cows and sheep are rotationally grazed during the growing season and fed hay in winter. The farm has exclusively bred with A2 bulls since 2009. Their farming philosophy prioritizes land stewardship and animal welfare, ensuring that all practices contribute to the health of the ecosystem and the quality of their products.
The Rest
Misty Brook Farm offers a variety of products including raw cow and sheep milk, cream, gouda cheese, grass-fed beef, veal, lamb, pasture-raised pork, soy-free eggs, and grains. The farm store operates on an honor system and is open year-round. They also deliver weekly to health food stores across Maine. The farm is run by the Holmes family and a dedicated team of year-round staff, who are committed to producing high-quality, organic food with honesty and transparency.
