About the Farm
Background
Mercy Corps Northwest Refuge Gardens program began with a mission to support refugee families in their transition to life in the United States. Over the years, they have become known for empowering families from Bhutan and Myanmar to grow over thirty varieties of vegetables. Their produce is sold at the Portland Farmers Market and through a CSA program, contributing to the local food supply and community health.
Practices
The program emphasizes the stewardship of natural resources, growing vegetables without synthetic inputs. Participants work collaboratively to cultivate the land, ensuring that farming practices are both ecologically sound and beneficial to family health. This approach not only improves the soil but also fosters a sense of community and shared purpose.
The Rest
The program operates at two garden sites in the Portland area and sells produce at the Portland Farmers Market on Saturdays and Wednesdays. They are dedicated to creating opportunities for refugee families to thrive, providing tools and support to help them earn income and improve their lives.
