About the Farm
Background
Matfield Maple Farm, run by Dick Forbes, has garnered attention and appreciation from various media outlets including Boston 25, WGBH, and The Boston Herald. Over the years, the farm has become known for its maple syrup production and its charming Babydoll Southdown sheep. Despite its small size, the farm has built a loyal customer base and has been featured in numerous articles and TV segments.
Practices
The farm focuses on producing high-quality maple syrup and raising Babydoll Southdown sheep. These sheep are known for their hardiness, good foraging abilities, and the organic fertilizer they produce. The wool from these sheep can be used for spinning or felting. The farm emphasizes the importance of keeping the sheep in groups for their well-being and highlights their peaceful, curious, and intelligent nature.
The Rest
Tours are available on Saturdays and Sundays in March, with no reservations required. Admission is $7.00 per person, and tours begin promptly at noon and 2 PM. Visitors are advised to dress appropriately for the weather. The farm also offers registered Babydoll Southdown sheep for sale and maintains a waitlist for lambs. The store is currently closed, but customers can email to be placed on the waitlist for future lambs.
