About the Farm
Background
The first acres of the Masumoto Family Farm were purchased in 1948 by Takashi 'Joe' Masumoto after the family returned to California following unjust incarceration during World War II. With family labor and resilience, the Masumotos enriched the soil and planted roots. Today, the farm is renowned for its organic peaches, nectarines, apricots, and raisins. David Mas Masumoto, a third-generation Japanese American artist farmer, has brought attention to the farm through his literary works, including 'Epitaph for a Peach,' and a documentary film, 'Changing Season,' which captures a moment of generational transition.
Practices
The farm adheres to certified organic practices, cultivating their 80 acres with a focus on sustainability and organic integrity. They emphasize the importance of heirloom produce and the realities of organic farming through initiatives like the Elberta Peach Tree Adoption program. The farm's methods include sun-curing their Thompson Seedless grapes to produce raisins, avoiding the use of chemicals or dehydrators. The interconnectedness of family, land, and community is central to their farming philosophy, aiming to create a sustainable world and healthy bodies through their produce.
The Rest
The Masumoto Family Farm hosts an annual Elberta Peach Tree Adoption program to educate others about heirloom produce and organic farming. They offer a variety of stone fruits, each with unique characteristics, through their Drive Thru service. The farm also engages the community through writing, art, and seasonal newsletters. They invite visitors to be part of their community and share in the joy of their harvests.
