About the Farm
Background
Since 1966, Elmhill Incorporated has created various programs to serve Vermont youth. In 1989, it founded Maplehill School and later expanded to include Maplehill Farm. Originally, Elmhill provided a group home for adolescents, parent support, adolescent advocacy, and educational programs. Currently, Elmhill oversees the operations of Maplehill School, Maplehill Farm, the Maplehill School AmeriCorps Volunteer program, and the Elder Outreach Project.
Practices
The farm explores alternative methods of education, food production and distribution, community development, and land-based sustainability. It emphasizes stewardship of the land, growing its own food, and integrating land and community-based learning. The educational approach includes project-based and experiential learning, small group and one-on-one learning, and teaching restorative practices.
The Rest
Maplehill School and Farm is operated by Elmhill Inc., a non-profit educational and charitable organization. The farm is located on 142 acres in Plainfield, Vermont, and is committed to staying informed on the latest evidence-based practices. Staff attend regular trainings throughout the year on topics such as Developmental Trauma, Crisis Prevention Intervention, and Neuro-Diversity. The farm collaborates with Goddard College to create continuing learning opportunities in the community.
