About the Farm
Background
Main Street Project has a mission to build a socially, economically, and ecologically sustainable food system that revitalizes rural communities. Graduates of their agripreneur training program raise their first flocks of free-range poultry on community incubator farms, with many aiming to launch their own farm businesses. The farm's products are available at direct drop sites in Northfield and the southern Twin Cities area.
Practices
The farm raises free-range chickens outdoors, free of crates or confinement, with ample space and sunlight. They are fed non-GMO grains, sprouts, and forages, and are free of antibiotics, chemicals, and synthetic hormones. The farm employs regenerative farming practices, transforming previously degraded farmland into a vibrant ecosystem. They focus on perennial agriculture to heal the land and care for the community, restoring farmland from decades of monocropped corn and soy production.
The Rest
The farm is rooted in a 163-acre area known as Sharing Our Roots Farm, where immigrant, BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and emerging farmers and community gardeners work together. They provide land access and remove barriers for marginalized groups, promoting local food security and sovereignty through community gardens. The farm also hosts events such as the Emerging Farmer’s Market and volunteer activities to support farm demonstration gardens.
