About the Farm
Background
More than 20 years after studying agriculture in Wales, Mimi Beaven returned to farming at Made in Ghent, a 10-acre farm in upstate New York. After working in the restaurant industry, moving to the United States, and starting a family, she combined her love of farming and food. Inspired by other family farms in the region, she focuses on providing safe and nutritious food for her community.
Practices
Mimi employs sustainable, high-welfare farming methods to raise her animals, allowing them to live outside on pasture and perform their natural behaviors. Her pasture-raised meat birds include Silver Barred Cockerels and Freedom Rangers, while her laying hens are a mix of breeds like Speckled Sussex, Ameraucana, Dark Cornish, Cuckoo Maran, and Blue Hamburg. These breeds are chosen for their resilience to cold and suitability for pasture-based farming. Mimi's pigs are selected for their ability to thrive outdoors. Her practices meet the stringent standards of Animal Welfare Approved (AWA), ensuring high animal welfare and helping consumers identify quality products.
The Rest
Made in Ghent’s eggs, pork, chicken, bread, and vegetables are available directly from the farm. The farm has been featured in Edible Hudson Valley magazine, highlighting its commitment to seasonality and sustainability. For more information on where to find their AWA-certified eggs, visit AWA’s Online Directory.
