About the Farm
Background
Longwoods Alpaca Farm operated in Cumberland, Maine from April 2004 until July 2016, when the last of their livestock was sold. The farm itself was sold in April 2017. The business now operates as Longwoods Alpacas in Southwest Harbor, Maine, continuing to knit and weave using yarns made from their fiber.
Practices
Longwoods Alpacas emphasizes the importance of fiber sorting by color, length, and fineness to ensure the quality of their products. They are members of the Natural Fiber Producers Cooperative, which helps lower costs and increase the quality and potential profits of various alpaca fiber products. Certified as an alpaca fiber sorter in 2011, the farm believes in putting 100% of the annual fiber clip to its highest and most profitable use.
The Rest
Longwoods Alpacas participates in three farmers markets during the summer and offers a variety of alpaca fiber products, including yarn, rovings, handwoven scarves, rugs, mats, duvets, socks, and handknit garments. Their farm store is open by appointment, and they also provide fiber sorting services. Hand knits and handwovens are available for sale on their website and at various local outlets. Wholesale accounts are welcome for retail outlets looking to sell quality handcrafted goods from Maine.
