About the Farm

Background

Athens Locally Grown was founded in 2001 through the combined efforts of Dan and Kristen Miller (Heirloom Organics) and the input from current and past member farms. Over its twenty-year history, the cooperative grew to include nearly a hundred small farms and gardeners, selling an abundance of products to over 4000 individuals and families, as well as local restaurants and grocery stores. Despite its closure, the cooperative was known for its dedication to community, environment, health, and education.

Practices

Each grower farms his/her land using strict standards to ensure that everything produced is chemical-free. The cooperative emphasizes the importance of sustainable agriculture practices, working to preserve greenspace, protect natural resources, support the local economy, and provide meaningful work. Member farms often dedicate personal time to building community gardens and providing educational programs for children and adults, including those with special needs.

The Rest

Locally Grown allowed customers to order exactly what they wanted, in the quantities they wanted, from the farms they preferred. Orders were placed weekly via the website, with pickups scheduled for Thursdays. The cooperative also offered gift certificates and membership sponsorships, and charged an annual membership fee of $20 per household to support farm tours, educational programs, and overhead costs.
