About the Farm
Background
Located in Perkiomenville along the Perkiomen Creek, the farm was rebuilt by German settler Valentine Kratz in 1802 after the original farmhouse was lost to a fire. The farm is dotted with antique barns, a root cellar, and the historical Caledona copper mine. The current family moved to the farm in 2015 and has since been dedicated to blending historical land management methods with modern regenerative and organic agricultural practices.
Practices
The farm employs no-till farming methods, builds its own compost including worm castings, and uses strictly organic inputs and holistic methodology. They are USDA Certified Organic and use certified organic and heirloom seeds. The farm's philosophy centers on improving soil ecology and protecting the environment. Their birds are fed soy-free organic feed and are rotated on pesticide-free pastures. Microgreens are grown from all-organic seeds in a blend of worm castings and compost, without pesticides or chemicals.
The Rest
The farm offers a variety of products including fresh pastured eggs, organic microgreens, and handmade soaps. They also raise kunekune pigs, Nigerian Dwarf goats, and a range of fowl including heritage breed Chocolate Turkeys and India Blue Peafowl. The farm is home to a pride of six barn cats and three farm dogs. They are committed to understanding the historical and social forces that underpin their agriculture and society, with some efforts directed toward PhD studies.
