About the Farm

Background

The Spring Street Farm Project was initiated in 2009 by the Long Beach Community Action Partnership as part of the Youth Opportunity Center's Green Jobs program. Located centrally in Long Beach, the farm has become a community hub, engaging individuals, families, school children, and boy scouts as volunteers. It also serves as a work site for teens seeking their first employment experience.

Practices

Spring Street Farm employs organic and sustainable farming methods, using only organic starts and seeds. The farm avoids chemical pesticides and fertilizers, focusing instead on natural methods to maintain soil health and crop productivity. The farm features a teaching garden with vertical plantings and an aquaponic system, emphasizing education and sustainable agriculture techniques.

The Rest

The farm stand operates all day on Tuesdays and Fridays, year-round, and accepts WIC coupons. The farm's location is conveniently situated near public transportation, making it accessible to the community. The project continues to collaborate with the Youth Opportunity Center, providing valuable job training and experience for local teens.
