About the Farm

Background

In 1922, Laurel Springs opened its parlor doors as Smyth County's oldest dairy, operated by six generations of the Umbarger family, including Seth and his father, Everette. Initially a dairy farm providing milk, cream, and cheese, it transitioned to beef cattle in 2013 after Seth graduated from Virginia Tech with a degree in Dairy Science and partnered with Pineland Farms Natural Meats. Seth's wife, Courtney, joined the farm in 2015, bringing her expertise in Agricultural Technology and animal husbandry.

Practices

The farm adheres to Global Animal Partnership's 5-step program, with their beef cattle categorized under level 4, a pasture-centered program. The cattle are raised without antibiotics, growth hormones, or animal byproducts, ensuring a stress-free life. The farm emphasizes traceability, allowing consumers to know every moment of the animal's life.

The Rest

The farm offers customers the option to purchase whole animals, portions, or specific cuts directly from the farm. Addison, age 7, is already involved in farm activities, such as checking cattle and collecting eggs.
