About the Farm

Background

Brian Lau's journey into farming began in his childhood, spending summers on his grandparents' small farm in Paris, Illinois. His early experiences included gardening and working on a neighboring hog and row crop farm. After earning a degree in Environmental Biology, Brian returned to farming, eventually partnering with his cousin Kevin Augustus. They expanded their operations, purchasing land and equipment, and in 1998, they acquired 160 acres that had belonged to their great-great-grandparents. Despite initial skepticism from neighbors, they persevered and diversified their farming practices.

Practices

The farm employs a variety of agricultural practices, including crop rotation and pasture-raising livestock. They grow corn, soybeans, wheat, alfalfa, hay, and forage crops, alongside vegetables. Livestock management includes raising beef cows, turkeys, pigs, broiler chickens, and laying hens on pasture, which promotes animal welfare and soil health. The farm also engages in custom farming services.

The Rest

The farm is in its eleventh year of operating a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program, providing fresh produce and meat to local families. Brian's background in environmental biology and his passion for farming have shaped the farm's approach, blending ecological awareness with practical farming techniques. The farm's story is deeply rooted in family heritage and a dedication to the land.
