About the Farm

Background

Established in 1979 by Rick and Kristie Knoll, the farm began as a personal project and evolved into a market-focused operation. Known for its contributions to California food culture, the farm has been a hidden gem in Brentwood, CA. After nearly two decades of organic certification, they dropped it in 2002 to protest certain practices but renewed it in 2009. The farm became an LLC on January 1, 2011.

Practices

The farm emphasizes soil health and biodiversity, treating soil as a living organism. They use no pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, or any 'cides. Their farming philosophy focuses on producing high-quality, delicious food while maintaining a haven for local wildlife.

The Rest

The farm operates year-round, employing 9-12 full-time field hands and a part-time delivery person. They sell primarily within a 100-mile radius, including to restaurants, bakeries, and specialty-produce stores. They are forming a CSA for the East Contra Costa area and participate in the Ferry Plaza Farmer's Market in San Francisco. The farm stand is currently closed for reworking, but orders can be picked up by contacting them via email.
