About the Farm
Background
Kevin Bassette began working for Henry Killam at the age of 9, on a farm that had been in Killam's family since the 1800s. Initially a dairy and tobacco farm, it transitioned to produce in the 1990s due to declining milk prices. The farm attended its first farmer's market in 1998 and now participates in over 26 markets across Connecticut.
Practices
The farm employs Integrated Pest Management (IPM), using beneficial insects like ladybugs to control pests and minimizing pesticide use. They irrigate during dry years and rely on natural rainfall during wet years, though the latter poses more challenges. Produce is picked fresh daily, and the farm avoids using pesticides whenever possible.
The Rest
The farm operates an 'Honor System' farmstand and offers award-winning homemade jams, sauces, pickles, and relishes made from their own produce. They also provide recipes and gardening advice at farmer's markets, where they value direct customer feedback. Surplus produce is used to feed their chickens and neighboring pigs.
