About the Farm
Background
KY Bison Co. began in 1996 when Steve Wilson and Laura Lee Brown purchased Woodland Farm in Oldham County, KY, aiming to preserve farmland and return it to a working state. The farm, which had been fallow for years, required extensive restoration. They chose to raise American buffalo, starting with twenty-five calves from Custer State Park. Over time, the herd and staff grew, and the farm became known for its high-quality bison meat and sustainable practices. Woodland Farm, dating back to the 1840s, was added to the National Register of Historical Places in 1997.
Practices
KY Bison Co. raises bison on open pastures without the use of hormones, steroids, stimulants, or sub-therapeutic antibiotics. The farm employs sustainable practices such as no-till growing methods and hand-picking insects from plants. Bison are fed whole, non-GMO grain rations for 360 days prior to processing. The farm's lumber is harvested from its own forests, and sustainable biofuel is used for farm implements. The farm also processes its meat at its own Animal Welfare Approved, USDA facility.
The Rest
Woodland Farm integrates contemporary art into its landscape, featuring pieces like giant pink snails and a Deborah Butterfield horse. The farm also houses a beautifully restored chapel that serves as a guest house. Lumber from the farm is used in construction projects, including other ventures by the owners. Educational opportunities are available for school groups, garden clubs, and art lovers. The farm is part of the Kentucky Mesonet project, hosting a weather station that provides valuable climate data. KY Bison Co. offers retail and wholesale bison meat, and their products are available at specialty markets and quality restaurants throughout Kentucky.
