About the Farm
Background
Established in 1908 by John Steele Gourley, the orchard's location in the Snake River Canyon was chosen for its unique climate conditions. John Steele Gourley, originally from Pennsylvania, planted the first trees with money borrowed from his father and brother. The orchard has been passed down through generations, with Richard Kelley expanding it to include more fruit varieties and vegetables. Today, it is operated by Richard's wife Caryn and daughters Gretchen and Robin, continuing the family's legacy.
Practices
The orchard benefits from the warmth retained by canyon rocks after sunset and the temperature stabilization provided by the Snake River. Trees were selected for their ability to adapt to these conditions and produce viable fruit. The family continues to cultivate the land with care, maintaining a direct-to-consumer approach by selling their produce in various local markets.
The Rest
Kelley's Canyon Orchard received the Century Farm Award in 2019, recognizing over 100 years of continuous family farming. Visitors can enjoy a pick-your-own experience or purchase already picked produce at the orchard's fruit stand. The orchard also offers short-term rentals for those looking to stay and experience the beautiful Snake River Canyon.
