About the Farm
Background
The farm was pioneered by the Rodriguez family in 1952. Joe Rodriguez Sr., known as Grampa Joe, moved to Escondido in 1960 and modernized the farm, initially using conventional methods. His son, Joe Jr., introduced organic techniques in the 1980s, leading to the farm’s certification as organic in 1986. The farm has since been a family-run operation with over 120 years of cumulative farming experience.
Practices
The farm employs organic farming methods, using fertilizers such as rock phosphate, green sand, worm castings, kelp, and compost. They avoid all sprays, including natural ones, and control pests with beneficial insects and proper soil preparation. The farm emphasizes soil health and nutrient-rich produce.
The Rest
The farm prides itself on delivering produce within 24 hours of harvest, ensuring freshness and nutritional value. Grampa Joe, although technically retired, remains active on the farm, while Grandma Cristina, a pillar of support, continues to live on the farm and cook for the family. Farmer Joe Jr. is dedicated to refining organic farming practices, and Carlos Rodriguez, Joe Jr.'s youngest brother, has been involved in various aspects of farm operations.
