About the Farm

Background

As far back as the 1950s, the Jones Family has been 'the farm' to buy directly from the farmer in the Baltimore-Harford County area. The first Jones arrived in the area before 1900, coming to America from Wales. They settled on 300 plus acres bordering the Gunpowder River in Baltimore County. Maurice's great grandfather Samuel and his grandfather Clarence would take vegetables to the wholesale food markets in Baltimore City. The present market location on Route 7 was the first market in the area where you could buy directly from the farm. Kenny Jones started this market stand in 1956, and then his son Wayne Jones continued it until Maurice and Deborah became the owners. In 2005, they opened a little wagon on the corner of route 543 and route 646, which operated on the old-fashioned 'honor system' of payment.

Practices

The Jones Family grows approximately 30 fruit and vegetable items, including corn, tomatoes, watermelon, cantaloupe, green beans, squash, and cucumbers. The farm operates from April 1st to December 23rd, starting with Easter flowers and late winter/early spring crops, followed by strawberries and summer produce. Fall brings pumpkins, mums, gourds, and a variety of squash. They also offer fresh-cut Christmas trees starting the day after Thanksgiving from their Christmas Tree farm in Northern Harford County. The farm participates in the HCPS Farm to School Program, providing fresh produce to local schools.

The Rest

The farm offers pick-your-own strawberries and cut flowers from the end of May through the end of August. They have numerous retail greenhouses for plants and flowers, two farm markets, and participate in the Rotunda Farmer's Market in Baltimore. They also offer a CSA program where members can choose their weekly basket contents. Educational field trips are available, and they accept WIC Coupons, Seniors Farmers' Market Nutrition Program Coupons, and EBT.
