About the Farm

Background

Johnston Fruit Farms began in 1954 when Dale and Pauline Johnston planted their first fruit trees with the hope of supporting their family and the nutritional needs of the community. Over seventy years later, the farm remains in the hands of family members and friends, continuing to provide local fruit at reasonable prices with courteous service. Known for their unpasteurized cider, crafted in small batches using the original press, the farm has maintained its traditional methods for over six decades.

Practices

The farm employs a mix of organic and conventional farming practices, with about 50% of their products being organic. They avoid certain conventional methods, such as waxing apples and pasteurizing cider. Their commitment to quality is evident in their choice of crop varieties, including heirloom apples known for superior flavor. The farm's approach to pest management includes the use of organic pesticides and methods where possible.

The Rest

Visitors can enjoy a free petting zoo, picnic area, and various seasonal activities, including u-pick strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, apples, and pumpkins. The farm also hosts birthday parties and school tours from June through October. An annual event, 'Apples for Everyone,' takes place on the last Saturday in September, where over 20,000 lbs of apples are donated to local food banks. The farm offers free parking, no admission fee, and amenities like restrooms and a picnic area. Dogs on leashes are allowed in certain areas, and professional photographers can purchase an all-day pass. Additionally, visitors can view the cider-making process through a special viewing window starting around Labor Day.
