About the Farm
Background
Johnson's Orchards was established in 1918 by J Elmo Johnson, the great grandson of John T. Johnson, on family property dating back to the 1750s. The orchard, known for its over 100 different apple varieties, has evolved to include a winery, Peaks of Otter Winery, which opened in 1995 as Virginia's 50th farm winery. The farm has received accolades such as the 2006 Bedford Agribusiness of the Year and the 2007 Outstanding Conservation Farm of the Year award.
Practices
The Johnsons practice grass-feeding for their cattle, goats, and sheep, and are certified 'Green' for their conservation efforts. The winery uses 70% of fruits grown on the farm, including heritage apple varieties, Norton and Concord grapes, and various berries. Many of the wines are made from family recipes, fermenting fruits in apple juice to reduce sugar usage.
The Rest
The farm is a participant in the Bedford County Farm Tour and hosts the annual Horse & Hound Wine Festival every second Saturday in July. Visitors can enjoy picking fruit, tasting wine, and visiting farm animals. The winery produces over 25 wines, including unique varieties like Pumpkin and Pomegranate, and offers fresh apples, peaches, and nectarines for sale. The farm is open daily from April through December and on weekends from January through March.
