About the Farm
Background
Atrus Ballew Farm, located on a 27-acre plot in Richmond, KY, is a fifth-generation family farm. Over the years, it has become known for its diverse agricultural production, including fruit, berries, vegetables, herbs, and seeds. The farm also produces medicinal herbs and honey, and it has gained recognition for its educational workshops, retreats, tours, and community pollinator projects. Farmer Jim Embry, a noted permaculture expert and Slow Food proponent, has recently been honored with the 2023 James Beard Leadership Award. Embry's extensive background as a community activist and founder of the Sustainable Communities Initiative in Lexington has significantly shaped the farm's mission and outreach.
Practices
Atrus Ballew Farm employs a variety of sustainable farming practices, with a strong emphasis on permaculture principles. The farm maintains beehives and is actively working to expand honey production and increase bee diversity. A 12-acre pollinator conservation project features 20 varieties of forbs, annuals, and perennials, with a focus on Milkweeds for Monarch Butterflies and Sunflowers for varroa mite resistance. The farm also diversifies its plantings with various clover, milkweed, grasses, and mints. Additionally, bat houses are installed for natural pest control. The farm is part of the Ujamaa Cooperative Farming Alliance, which focuses on culturally-relevant seeds. Education and training on seed saving and seed farming are also provided. A combined solar and wind generating system powers the high tunnel micro-irrigation system and the bee house.
