About the Farm
Background
Owned and operated by Jim and Eliza Rickards, the vineyard has been planted over the past 40 years, augmenting the original 1908 Zinfandel vines. The winery started in 2005, born out of the encouragement of friends who enjoyed the small lots of wine made since 1991. The first offering was about 150 cases from the 2004 and 2005 vintages, growing to 5000 cases over the next few years.
Practices
The vineyard produces several varietals that thrive on the diverse blocks throughout its 60 acres. Zinfandel, both from the old vines and new plantings of old clones, is bold and spicy. Petite Sirah is handled gently to soften its tannic nature, bottled on its own and blended with Zinfandel. Malbec from the lower pond area is a stunning varietal. A blend called Five Sisters is made from traditional Bordeaux varieties, all estate grown. The majority of the grapes harvested go to other renowned wineries in the area, continuing partnerships while selecting blocks for their own wines.
The Rest
The Darn Fine Brown Barn, built in 1997, has evolved from housing tractors to become a rustic tasting room overlooking the valley. Open for wine pickups and tastings Monday through Saturday, with appointments required on Fridays and Saturdays. Walk-ins are welcome Monday through Thursday based on availability.
