About the Farm
Background
Established in 1937 by Mollie and John Wesley Hunter, Sr., the farm began with fifty acres and a few animals, growing into a 1000+ acre operation known for producing cotton, peanuts, corn, and beef cattle. John Sr. was recognized for his excellence in farm management and soil conservation, receiving the Georgia Merit Farmer award in 1956 and being featured in Ebony Magazine in 1972. The farm is now maintained by John and Mollie's children, who have upheld its legacy through economic shifts and changing times.
Practices
Hunter Farms is transitioning its beef operation from grain-based to a pasture system, providing cattle with constant access to pasture and a diet of grass and forage. The farm's cattle are certified by the American Grassfed Association, Animal Welfare Approved, and the Global Animal Partnership, focusing on humane treatment and restricting antibiotics and steroids. Synthetic fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides are no longer applied to pastures, which are now certified organic. Conservation practices include soil conservation, soil quality, water quality, rotational grazing, and cover crops, implemented in collaboration with the Natural Resources and Conservation Service and Georgia Organics.
The Rest
Hunter Farms has maintained a closed herd of cattle with genetics dating back to the original herd. The farm's commitment to animal welfare and environmental sustainability is reflected in its certifications and practices.
