About the Farm
Background
Located in the forested hills of north-central West Virginia, the Staddon family has been providing honeybees in the form of nucleus colonies since 2011. Michael Staddon, the principle operator, is a Master Beekeeper and has been active in beekeeper education since 2007. The farm is known for its high-quality honey and beehive products, and it hosts farm tours for school groups and families.
Practices
The farm uses locally adapted honey bee stock and raises bees naturally, focusing on varroa resistance, gentleness, vigor, productivity, and wintering ability. The bees are practically free of all mite treatments since 2010, and the farm regularly tracks mite levels to select the most resistant colonies for breeding. The bees are registered with the state of West Virginia and inspected annually. The farm employs modern capabilities without violating their stewardship philosophy, viewing the health of plants, animals, and people as interconnected.
The Rest
The farm sells honey, pollen, beeswax, propolis, and royal jelly when available. They also offer nucleus colonies and queens raised from their most vigorous, productive, gentle, untreated mother colonies. Customers have reported great success, productivity, and gentleness from their stock. The farm believes in breaking free from pesticide dependency and uses nutrition and genetics to combat mites.
