About the Farm
Background
Located on an old homestead from the late 1800s in Surprise Valley, the ranch began selling grass-fed and finished beef in 2005, becoming the first grass-fed beef vendor at the Walnut Creek Farmer's Market and expanding to other markets and local food stores. Initially raising Angus cattle, the ranch transitioned to Murray Grey cattle in 2010 for their favorable characteristics.
Practices
Cattle are born and raised on the ranch's pastures, living free range and consuming pasture grass or hay, and drinking pure water from the Warner Mountains. The ranch avoids the use of antibiotics and hormones, focusing on natural growth and well-being of the cattle. The ranch is certified Animal Welfare Approved and Certified Grass-fed.
The Rest
The ranch operates on a historic site with a blacksmith shop and old-growth orchard. They now run a smaller herd and sell bulk beef directly to customers, with ongoing efforts to pursue additional certifications.
