About the Farm
Background
Operating since 1832, this farm has been run by seven generations of the same family. It is known for its long-standing commitment to sustainable agriculture and community-supported agriculture (CSA), making it Wilmington's oldest farm and longest-running CSA program.
Practices
The farm employs sustainable agriculture methods, including crop rotation, minimal tillage, cover cropping, and composting. They use organic pesticides, beneficial insect controls, and avoid synthetic pesticides, fertilizers, sewage sludge, organophosphates, synthetic chemicals, or GMOs. Mulch options like leaves, wood chips, and straw are used to suppress weeds and maintain soil health. Planting distances and pruning are carefully planned to ensure plant health, and the farm starts its own herbs, vegetables, and flowers in greenhouses to ensure high-quality produce.
The Rest
The farm market offers organic and gluten-free products and operates from Tuesday to Saturday. While there are no 'pick your own' options, customers can shop in the barn without being CSA members. The farm also grows pumpkins available for purchase in-season. The farm emphasizes transparency, allowing customers to learn about the growing process and the farm's commitment to environmental stewardship.
