About the Farm
Background
Hexenring Mushrooms, established in 2016 by Steve and Anne Kirk after relocating from Baltimore, MD to Capon Springs, West Virginia, began as a dream to return to the land without adhering to traditional farming. Inspired by their foraging experiences and the nutritional and medicinal benefits of mushrooms, they aimed to educate their community and provide high-quality fresh mushrooms.
Practices
The farm employs outdoor cultivation to allow mycelial networks to interact with local wildlife and ecosystems, including ants, spiders, snails, gnats, flies, lichen, deer, frogs, raccoons, bears, and mold. When indoor cultivation is necessary, they use local or on-farm substrates. While not certified organic, they prioritize healthy and vibrant produce, emphasizing intention and vision over certification.
The Rest
Hexenring Mushrooms is open to questions about their cultivation process, maintaining transparency and a commitment to educating others about mushroom farming.
